Big, bold, season-long color is made easier with this top-performing Verbena VANESSA\u2122 Series<\/h2>\n

Let\u2019s face it. Older verbena series just did not perform. They couldn\u2019t offer season-long color and they were plagued with\u00a0mildew. That\u2019s why we went back to the drawing board to develop\u00a0a new verbena series that had superior mildew tolerance and wouldn\u2019t\u00a0cycle out of flower.
\nAfter years of extensive testing, Danziger is bringing verbena back. Two\u00a0new verbena series, VANESSA\u2122 and VANESSA\u2122 Compact<\/a>, provide color all
\nseason long with excellent mildew resistance.<\/p>\n

BACKGROUND<\/h2>\n

\u201cOur goal was to create clean and colorful verbena,\u201d says Amir Zuker,\u00a0Ph.D., vice president of research and development at Danziger. \u201cThis has\u00a0been a 10-year process. Through extensive breeding work and testing
\naround the globe, we now have two verbena series that show excellent\u00a0mildew resistance. They also consistently push out new blooms, ensuring\u00a0the plant stays in color throughout the season.\u201d
\nDuring testing, prospective varieties were purposely exposed to\u00a0mildew. Testing was conducted around the globe, exposing prospects to\u00a0many different mildew strains and various environmental and growing\u00a0conditions. Danziger enforced a strict zero-tolerance policy on mildew.
\nOnly those varieties that stayed clean were kept in the program. Each color\u00a0in the series also was tested for bloom cycling. Only the plants that offered\u00a0consistent blooms made the cut.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cVanessa adds a bold\u00a0splash of color to\u00a0gallons. VANESSA\u2122 Compact\u00a0brings big color in a smaller size. This\u00a0series stays compact with minimal PGR use, providing outstanding color
\nin quarts. Both series are stunning in hanging baskets.\u201d<\/p>\n

AVAILABLE COLORS<\/h2>\n

VANESSA\u2122 is available in seven color options, including three bicolor\u00a0options \u2014 Bicolor Purple, Bicolor Pink and Koi, a white and red bicolor.
\nThe VANESSA\u2122Compact series features 10 colors, including two bicolor\u00a0varieties \u2014 Bicolor Purple<\/a> and Bicolor Rose.
\n\u201cGrowers really like all of the VANESSA\u2122\u00a0 bicolor options,\u201d adds Heredia.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese varieties work very well in combos paired with other solid color\u00a0verbena, petunias or calibrachoa.
\n\u2018Vanessa Bicolor Purple\u2019 is a\u00a0standout, with loads of dark- and\u00a0light-colored blooms. \u2018VANESSA\u2122 Compact Neon Pink<\/a>\u2019 is very\u00a0floriferous, providing strikingly\u00a0bright color that captures attention,\u00a0even from a distance.\u201d<\/p>\n

CULTURE GUIDELINES<\/h2>\n

Here are a few growing tips for\u00a0both the Vanessa and VANESSA\u2122 Compact verbena series:<\/p>\n

\u2022 The optimal pH for verbena is\u00a05.8 to 6.4 with an EC of .80\u00a0to .90 when rooting. Optimal\u00a0pH for finishing is between\u00a01.0 and 1.2.
\n\u2022 Both the Vanessa and Vanessa\u00a0Compact varieties were chosen\u00a0specifically because they don\u2019t\u00a0bolt right after sticking or\u00a0transplanting. Our research has\u00a0found that both varieties are more\u00a0controlled even in propagation.
\n\u2022 If stretching is a concern,\u00a0B-Nine (daminozide) can be\u00a0applied the day after sticking\u00a0the URC at 2,500 ppm. This\u00a0can reduce early stretching in\u00a0propagation. The plant growth\u00a0regulator enters through the\u00a0leaves,
\nso roots are\u00a0 ot needed\u00a0for the B-Nine to be effective.
\n\u2022 Verbena perform best when the\u00a0soil is moderately moist. Avoid\u00a0continuous saturated soil or\u00a0extreme drying to severe wilt.
\n\u2022 Finish Vanessa and Vanessa\u00a0Compact in high light conditions\u00a0(4,000 foot-candles or greater).\u00a0This creates the optimal\u00a0environment for best plant\u00a0development and flowering.
\n\u2022 Optimal growing temperature\u00a0should range from 72\u00b0 to 74\u00b0 F\u00a0in weeks 1 through 3. Growing\u00a0temperature should drop to\u00a065\u00b0 to 68\u00b0 F
\nin weeks 4\u00a0through 12.
\n\u2022 Pinch verbena in the third\u00a0week after sticking.
\n\u2022 To reach the desired control of\u00a0plants for finish, spray B-Nine\u00a0or B-Nine\/A-Rest (ancymidol).\u00a0Spraying can be done any time\u00a0as needed, in the liner.
\n\u2022 A Bonzi (paclobutrazol) drench\u00a0at 2 ppm can also be used as\u00a0needed. Consult the label for\u00a0proper application directions.
\n\u2022 Pest concerns are whitefly,\u00a0leafminers and aphids.
\n\u2022 Primary disease concerns are\u00a0Botrytis and root rot. Proper\u00a0environmental conditions,\u00a0including lowering humidity\u00a0levels and maintaining good\u00a0airflow in the greenhouse\u00a0can help prevent potential\u00a0disease issues.
